Kim Mupangilai's sculptural chair Bina, is a cross-cultural self-portrait. The form and gesture of the Belgian's designer's work echo the graceful curves of a dancing body, perhaps one moving to a Congolese rhythm ("bina" means dance in her father's language). The three materials used in the work represent Mupangilai's father's home country and have been used as a way for the designer to connect with her heritage. The teak and stone refer to the Democratic Republic of Congo's rich natural resources, while the rattan, a more common material, can be found in everyday furniture and cooking utensils.
