A sense of mathematical serenity pervades Xandre Kriel’s work, evident in the folded steel legs of the Vos Altar table. This version is the first in the series to be cast in bronze (rather than carved in marble or granite), which here takes on a softly textured surface whose patina will enrich over time. Xandre designed the Vos Altar table in memory of his grandfather, a farmer who could fix or build almost anything with little resources. It was he who introduced the designer to the world of hands-on making that gave rise to a his fascination with form. Xandre’s assemblage techniques are inspired by traditional Scandinavian and Japanese joinery, relying on tension and gravity to create balance.
