Roxanne Jackson’s ceramics combine punk urgency and innovation with a historical, encyclopedic mind. Digging deep into the origins and traditions of the greek vase as a method of story-telling, she tells her own kinds of stories on the candy-colored surfaces of her amphoras, revisiting fables, myths, and archetypes with dizzying and wild polarities. Here we find the imagery of her work at the crossroads of high-brow and low-brow, comedy and tragedy, the sacred and profane. This ceramic vase sprouts fungi as well as disembodied, gangrene witch fingers that inch their way around the piece, escaping it, or, perhaps, reclaiming it. Both beautiful and beastly, her work entertains the question of what is serious and what is simply, a joke.
