The absinthe green allure and undulating surface of Tiffany’s tiles make the “Belted Turtleback” a felicitous addition to any lively interior. At the age of 23, Tiffany traveled the Nile, docking at excavation sites along the way with his artist friends. He became inspired by the texture of Neolithic turtle shell rings and bracelets found along the way. After returning to Brooklyn, Tiffany began his decades-long experimentation with new glass techniques, and the turtleback tile was born. Towards the end of his career, Tiffany commemorated this glass variety with turtle soup at his legendary Egyptian fête.
