Created by Suzuki Kyokushosai I, this unique basket was made for ikebana flower arrangements. The attractive form was made with bamboo and rattan using the mat and hexagonal plaiting techniques. On the bottom, there is an incised signature reading Made by Kyokushōsai. The basket comes with its original fitted wooden tomobako storage box inscribed outside Flower Basket and signed inside Made by Kyokushōsai with seal Kyokushōsai.
A Tokyo-based basketmaker, Suzuki Kyokushōsai I (1872-1937) was a pupil of Iizuka Hōsai I, the founder of the important Iizuka line of basketmakers. The artist participated in local and national exhibitions during the 1920s and 1930s. A work by Suzuki is in the collection of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
