New York studio SO-IL has donated this signed, numbered letterpress print, created as part of Contemplating the Void, a 2010 exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York.

SO–IL was asked to propose ideas for an intervention in the famed building’s rotunda. Rather than an addition, SO–IL chose to reveal the theosophical ideas Wright had when considering his design. Seeing the rotunda as a space between heaven and earth, this print shows a view from the rotunda looking straight up towards one’s zenith, and straight down towards one’s nadir. The structure is erased to show people and art floating between these two poles. From a distance, the print reads as two neighboring galaxies or as a stereographic projection of the earth.

Launched in 2008, SO–IL is an internationally recognized architecture and design firm based in New York and led by Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg. Diverse in origin, its team of collaborators speaks a dozen languages and is informed by global narratives and perspectives. In partnership with the studio’s private and public clients, SO-IL explores how the creation of environments and objects inspires lasting, positive intellectual and societal engagement.

SO-IL has completed projects in Leon, Seoul, and Lisbon, as well as its hometown of Brooklyn. The studio’s work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. SO-IL’s team has received numerous accolades, including the Vilcek Award, the Curbed Groundbreakers Award, and the MoMAPS1 Young Architects Program Award.
