Polumbo has immersed himself in mushroom-materials studies since the COVID lockdown, and was fascinated by its unique properties. He has been making smaller pieces out of mycelium for decades, but more recently did a project with the Brooklyn Museum which used his panels made out of mycelium. Mushroom spores grown in molds populated with hemp straw or sawdust with flour for food, which turns into a Styrofoam or corklike material within intricate molds. Some pieces are adorned with handblown glass, glass beads, or hand silvered, but the unique texture and tone of the mushroom showed through.
Materials: Myclium.
