Each of the planters incorporates fiberglass resin, wood, and epoxy resin. Typically objects that I create are using a much more rigid substructure: wood, aluminum, or steel. But here for the first time I used fiberglass. It is not a new material, but it does offer a new direction in my work, a lighter substrate, it can achieve tighter curves, and a more organic feel.
To me this not only extends my material palette, but it also exposes the origin of my thinking of my research behind a lot of the work. And although I never specifically set out to mimic nature I am always thinking about the forms, patterns, and textures of nature. – Ross Hansen
