—Philipp Weber

Philipp Weber has donated Tacit Dialogues, a signed, limited-edition print depicting blown air moving inside molten glass, part of a larger investigation into the relationship between the handmade and the digitized. Measuring A4, the image is a cropped detail from a larger digital scan. It is printed with Risography on paper. Only five prints are available.

Describing Tacit Dialogues, Weber adds, “When designing my first series of lights, entitled Of Movement and Material, for Berlin-based lighting label ANALOG, I asked the glassblowers to dance with the material. The shapes that resulted from these dances speak of the dialogue between the human body and the viscous glass. In my ongoing research into the value of craft in a digitized reality, I was fortunate enough to team up with digital artist Andrea Familari to track these dance movements as well as to create 3D scans of the blown glass pendants made during these performances. The scans of the objects depict how the blown air moves inside the glass. This illustration shows a crop of this visual data and invites the viewer to reflect on the discourse between the handmade and the digitized.”

Berlin-based designer Philipp Weber earned a BA from Design Academy Eindhoven and an MA from Berlin University of Arts (UdK). His work explores the human relationship to materials and handcrafted processes in an increasingly digital world, often through the medium of glass. His designs have been exhibited broadly. In 2018, Weber was honored with the German Design Award for Newcomers by the German Design Council.

"Now more than ever, we must carefully consider the relationships between ourselves and the objects we engage with on a daily basis—as well as the modes by which we engage the world: namely, the physical and the digital.” —Philipp Weber
