Philipp Yuan of Archi-Union Architects has donated this original, signed and dated charcoal illustration of In Bamboo, a project completed by Archi-Union Architects in 2017.

The building is located in Daoming Town, Sichuan, and serves as a cultural center hosting exhibitions, conferences, and communal gatherings. The village is well known for its tradition of bamboo-weaving, a handicraft maintained by local residents and commonly seen in most local events in Daoming.

As the modern city continuously expands its boundary to the countryside, one of the major challenges that designers and architects encounter is rural construction and development in China. Integrating traditional construction methods with digital technologies, In Bamboo provides an innovative approach to rural revitalization. The project exemplifies the possibility of rapid construction with advanced fabrication methods, which may result in a boost in local economy and industrial development. It also demonstrates a paradigm of rethinking rural construction with form-finding and prefabrication processes.

Philip F. Yuan is a professor in College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University, visiting professor at MIT, and Thomas Jefferson professor at University of Virginia. His research involves the applications of prototypical methods and advanced manufacturing techniques and focuses on how digital tools offer the possibility of a new authorship for today’s architects, based on an understanding of culture, materials and the built environment.

Yuan's projects have received many international awards, and have been exhibited worldwide at venues such as Milan Triennial (2013), Shanghai Biennale (2014), Chicago Biennale (2017), Venice Biennale (2018), and Shenzhen/Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (2013, 2019), and have formed parts of several renowned museum collections, including Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
