“Recently I’ve been making a lot of folding-paper model kits with my son Leon. I decided that some of them needed their own small display shelf, and so I designed this small piece of furniture that can be printed and assembled from an A4 sheet.” —Peter Marigold

Peter Marigold has donated three versions of his clever Paper Shelf design. Emailed to the buyer as a digital file—including assembly instructions and a certificate of authenticity—Marigold’s Paper Shelves are designed to be printed at home and then folded into the shape of a shelf by the end-user. This version has the look of galvanized steel; the other two finishes are pine wood and honed concrete.

Born in London in 1974, Marigold earned his BA in Fine Art and Sculpture from Central St. Martins in London in 1997, and his MA in Design Products, studying under Ron Arad, at the Royal College of Art in 2006. Early on, he worked in sculpture as well as theatrical and event scenography, but ultimately he turned his focus primarily to furniture design.

An avid collector, much of Marigold’s work is concerned with storage and object display, and he often combines natural and man-made materials within simple, austere structures. He is the creator and director of FORMcard, a meltable bio-plastic product, and is regularly asked to teach classes and workshops at an array of design institutions.

Marigold’s clients include Paul Smith, Fendi, Sony, Bloomberg, and Li Edelkoort, among others. His work has been exhibited at MoMA New York, 21_21 Design Sight in Tokyo, Design Museum Holon, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Design Museum London. In 2009, he was awarded the Designer of the Future Award by Design Miami/ Basel.
