The body of Soleri's work referred to as Space for Peace had its beginnings in the 1960's with renderings and architectural models of space habitat designs, his first generation arcologies in space. These later generation cities in space are self-contained environments for living and working, providing the ecological and cultural resources necessary to support human life. Some space arcologies are designed to be built from asteroids mined by the inhabitants as they build. Some enclose an asteroid entirely, while others float free.
