“In the wake of such a terrible disaster, I stand with my colleagues and friends in Beirut, and have selected this drawing—which shows many elements united in a single composition—with the hope that all will stand together for progress and renewal.” —Nick Gelpi

Nick Gelpi has donated Distortions in the Field, a signed, limited-edition drawing made using a mix of analog and digital techniques, combining hand-drawn lines with a digitally fabricated template.

According to Gelpi, “The pattern warps and distorts the shapes of 6 individual tables, fusing them into a single field of voids... The pattern portrays a porous table, 18 feet long by 6 feet wide, installed in the lobby of the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami Beach in February 2014.”

Gelpi is Design Principal and founder of GELPI Projects, an award-winning architecture firm dedicated to engaging architecture through mockups, material representations, and building concepts. The practice has won numerous awards, including two recent honors from the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter for built projects and first place in the international design competition for the Wynwood Greenhouse Park in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. In 2016, his collaboration with artist Markus Linnenbrink, titled House Paint Pavilion, was nominated for a Mies Crown Hall of the Americas Prize (MCHAP) at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 2020, Gelpi was nominated for the Swiss Architecture Prize.

Gelpi is currently an Associate Professor of Architecture at Florida International University in Miami. In 2020 Gelpi’s first book, The Architecture of Full Scale Mockups, was published by Routledge Publishers. Gelpi trained professionally in the New York office of Steven Holl Architects, and he is a licensed architect in the state of Florida. Since 2016, he has served on the Planning Board for the City of Miami Beach. He holds a Masters degree from Columbia University and a Bachelors of Architecture from Tulane University.
