Nancy Lorenz incorporates techniques from traditional East Asian craft, notably, lacquer, into her multifaceted work. Lacquer involves the methodical application of many layers of urushi (a natural tree sap) over a base, sometimes with the addition of metal leaf, mother-of-pearl, or pigments. To realize boxes, mirrors, and furniture, like “Red Gold Pour Box,” Lorenz uses mother-of-pearl inlay and gold leaf, applying such materials with painterly gestures to create beautifully refined and sophisticated objects.
