“Early thoughts about a small corner of Beirut…” —Nabil Gholam

Nabil Gholam has donated this framed felt pen sketch, a study for the Saifi Project in Beirut. According to Gholam: “Located on the corner of one of the busiest road junctions in central Beirut, this study in fluid transparency and opacity is conceived as two low-rise, curvilinear blocks that are linked from the first floor upwards by glazed walkways. Given the tightness of the site, the studio’s aim to introduce as much greenery as possible to projects finds expression in two rooftop gardens, as well as a series of double-height, glazed atria. Multi-layered to deflect traffic noise, the glazed façade is divided by vertical stone fins, which serve as partial sun-breaks that protect without adversely affecting transparency. Where the fins pass across the double height voids, the stone is replaced by glass, which preserves views of the trees within and punctuates the façades with legible urban windows that overlook the busy thoroughfares around.”

He goes on: “Destined for private office use, the buildings open up to the city at ground level through an offering of shops and cafés. Entrances are glazed and by preserving the flow-through at street level, the design not only increases retail frontage and encourages pedestrian use but also preserves the existing sight line between the road and the buildings behind towards a sliver of sea at the end of the perspective.”

While studying Architecture at the UP-Paris Villemin, ex-École des Beaux Arts in Paris (D.P.L.G 1986), Gholam turned a hobby, photography, into a professional pursuit. He started a photography studio in Paris in 1980 before moving to New York six years later to complete his studies at Columbia University (MS Hons. Urban Planning). Throughout his career as an architect and planner, his passion for photography and specifically its focus on the visible or not so visible have been an intrinsic part of his approach.

Since its foundation in 1994, Nabil Gholam Architects (NGA) has grown into a multidisciplinary firm with a portfolio that spans projects in architecture and urbanism. NGA has won numerous competitions and awards, and its work has been consistently featured in local and international publications. As of 2006, a European branch of NGA was established in Barcelona, to later relocate to Seville in 2010, in order to oversee the firm’s international ventures.
