The Saturday Morning series mirrors have been a part of Misha Kahn’s practice for the better part of the last decade. The process of sewing flexible vinyl molds and casting the resin is reflexive for Kahn. The mirrors are an arena where Kahn has taken the opportunity to reference historical motifs such as in the Federal style-inspired On the Occasion of the Crumbling Empire. The newest multi-part mirrors reflect Kahn’s interest in fragmented forms and the incorporation of abstracted everyday objects. In the case of Earthship Mother, the palette and tonal gradation is gleaned from the four corners region of the US—a kaleidoscope of American nostalgia surrounding the country’s most stunning landscapes. Inherent in the mirror is the tension between the natural landscape and the artifice of commerce.
