Todd Merrill Studio has represented ceramist Mindy Horn since 2019. Horn believes that a life, an idea, a work of art all begin with perfection, or as she puts it “an untested plan of what they are meant to be.” In the course of their development, as each is nurtured and buffeted by forces beyond their control, mutations can occur to stimulate growth and survival. In her work, it is precisely this mutability or ability to adapt an altered blueprint that creates complexity and deeper layers of meaning. History and Translation, references the historic Dutch blue and white earthenware called delft that has been prevalent for centuries. Delft objects are typically encompassed by intricate imagery or patterning. In Horn’s work the floral imagery that we would expect swells across the painted tiled surface. White porcelain flora seems to grow from the bombastic composition unrestrained. The delicate porcelain petals, leaves, and stems encroach across the central rendered surface seemingly in an effort to reclaim their nature.
