“I’m donating this drawing because the massive explosion at Beirut’s port has resulted in the tragic loss of human life and trauma and has inflicted so much pain on an already deeply stressed city and its people. It is a city I admire, and I appreciate that all proceeds of the sale will support students and researchers involved in recovery efforts.” —Michael Manfredi, Weiss / Manfredi

Michael Manfredi has donated a signed, original illustration titled Dreams of Beirut. According to Manfredi, “The drawing is a soft, hazy aerial view of the city, its coastline, and the mountains beyond. The markings of charcoal disappear into the paper, while the ephemeral softness of the drawing suggest the Beirut of my dreams. For me, Beirut is as much a memory as a reality. Beirut is a city framed by water, earth, and sky—an apparition of a layered past and tragic present.”

Manfredi is a Senior Design Critic at Harvard University and cofounder of Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism. He was born in Trieste, Italy, and grew up in Rome. He completed his undergraduate education in the US, and received his Master of Architecture at Cornell University, where he studied with Colin Rowe. Manfredi has won the Paris Prize, was a Cornell Fellow, and was awarded an Eidlitz Fellowship. He is a board member for the Storefront for Art and Architecture, and was recently inducted into the National Academy of Design.

Manfredi's firm has been recognized with the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture, the Architectural League of New York’s "Emerging Voices" award, the New York AIA Gold Medal, and most recently the 2020 Thomas Jefferson Gold Medal in recognition of the firm’s significant contribution to culture and education. Weiss / Manfredi operates at the nexus of architecture, art, landscape, and urbanism. The firm recently won the international competition to reimagine the La Brea Tar Pits in LA, and they are also working on the US Embassy in New Delhi; the Baker Museum expansion in Naples; and Yale’s Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking.
