Maija Grotell was an important ceramicist and educator who in 1927
immigrated from Finland to the United States, where she became known to many as the “mother of American ceramics.” This work exemplifies her abstract approach and pioneering research on colored glazing, which influenced the use of glazed, colored bricks in mid-20th-century architecture.
