Isangqa (“circle” in Xhosa) is a gathering point, a large-scale ottoman whose material, scale and functionality break new ground for Madoda Fani. Based on his curvaceous, hand-carved ceramics, it is made from wood and bears the intricate, incised patterns that have become the artist ’s signature.
Madoda has become known for his hand-coiled ceramics that are a contemporary evolution of burnished and smoke-fired Nguni pots. Although he uses traditional techniques, his forms and hand-carved embellishments are entirely distinct.
