Handcrafted in panga panga wood by artisans in Botswana, the Supa Chair was designed by Mabeo Studio in 2015. Each component of the chair relies on a different skillset: the solid seat, the turned legs, and the woven leather cord back. This approach not only lends an attractive improvisational aesthetic—which is often necessary in the culture of making in Africa—but it also allows for a robust chair that can be shipped flat pack. Optional armrests are also post fitted in the same way. Measuring 52 x 47 x 79.5 cm, this design is an open edition made to order.
Founded by Peter Mabeo in 2006, Mabeo is a design brand from Botswana that marries concept, function, craft, and humanity in the production of discreet design objects for everyday life. Often collaborating with independent designers like Patricia Urquiola, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Garth Roberts, and Luca Nichetto, the atelier mindfully integrates a uniquely African sensibility into handcrafted works that have an international appeal. Whether self-initiated or on commission, each Mabeo design celebrates the mark of the human hand through a humane and sustainable approach.
