For his 2016 Close Parity collection, Maarten Baas began by creating childlike sketches, forgoing all concerns about the limitations of physics. The resulting objects maintain the naive oddity of the sketches and appear to defy physics. Very heavy counterweights hidden from view provide the structural stability that these objects need to function. The imperfections of Baas’s linework have been interpreted in brass with immaculate craftsmanship. The Close Parity Asymmetric Cabinet is a masterpiece of design, available as a limited edition of 8 + 2 AP.
Baas (b. 1979) is a Dutch designer who studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He is considered to be one of the most influential designers of the 21st century, often described as an artist-designer because his work straddles the boundaries between art and design.
