“LOT-EK extends our thoughts and love to our many dear friends and colleagues in Beirut. We are humbled to donate work to support such an urgent cause, and to aid the healing and resurgence of this beautiful city. [This] is a drawing that required immense care and time to create, with the underlying intention to radically transform something very ordinary. As we come to terms with the very extraordinary circumstances of Beirut, we feel this piece acknowledges the resolve for a new vision—to re-imagine and rebuild Beirut and its community.” —Ada Tolla, LOT-EK

LOT-EK has donated Foldable #8, a one-of-a-kind, signed drawing. It comes from of a series of 10 drawings; notably, Foldable #1 was acquired by MoMA. The series was first exhibited at Alden Projects in New York.

According to the architects: “Foldable #8 is a laser-cut architecture drawing on an ordinary cardboard shipping box (retaining its original commercial shipping labels). The box is re-assembled and transitioned into wall bound assemblage. It is part of the series Foldables (2016) comprising 10 folding works fashioned out of flattened, assembled, spray-painted, and laser cut cardboard boxes. Defying the conventions of two-dimensional painting and drawing as well as those of three dimensional sculpture and architecture, LOT-EK exploits the modest but complex make and structure of the cardboard itself.”

LOT-EK’s founding partners are Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano. They grew up in Naples, Italy, and live and work in New York. They have been in professional practice together since 1993. They teach at Columbia University GSAPP, where they completed post-graduate studies after studying architecture at the Universita’ di Napoli. Their work has received numerous accolades—from the Emerging Voices from the Architecture League to The New York American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Awards. LOT-EK makes sustainable, soulful architecture through the transformation of industrial infrastructural objects. Projects range from installations with artists to houses for families and cultural projects for clients like The Whitney Museum of Art and The Guggenheim Museum.
