The day following the tragic, massive explosion in Beirut Port, Lebanese French architect Lina Ghotmeh returned to the city where she was born to formally present a project she’d been working on for the past ten years: Stone Garden Tower. The project is sited less than a mile from the explosion site. It had been designed as an urban sculpture, reflecting on the city’s history and its war-torn cityscape.

As Ghotmeh writes, “Violence has always left its mark on the city’s buildings, hollowing their skins, leaving nature to invade.” Further, “The building echoes vernacular construction techniques, with its measured windows and custom-made hand crafted façade.” The project had garnered awards even prior to its completion.

“This is a unique hand drawing I produced of my building, Stone Garden, by the port of Beirut,” Ghotmeh writes. “I crafted this tower for a decade and was always determined to realize it—despite all the difficulties one faces when building in this city. Just upon its delivery, the building was hit by the blast of the 4th of August. The tower's shell stood unshaken; its earthly façade intact, yet the glass all shattered. This drawing expresses the feeling I had when I went to the site following the explosion. I was plunged into a deep sense of fragility, as I considered the survival of both my body and that of my architecture. The drawing is also a message of hope for reconstruction and a belief in the protective and optimistic power of architecture."

Ghotmeh is a critically acclaimed French Lebanese architect. Her Paris-based practice brings together architects, designers, and researchers in the pursuit of innovative, cutting-edge projects. Determined to achieve a fair and sustainable future, Ghotmeh’s architecture is intimately connected to nature. Crossing scales and geographies—from object designs to museum architecture, from France to Japan—her work embraces a historical and sensitive approach. She sees every project as an opportunity for in-depth research, leading to materially sensitive interventions that transport one’s memories and senses.
