Makram el Kadi and Ziad Jamaleddine of L.E.FT Architects have donated this signed, limited edition print on paper depicting their design for the Beirut Exhibition Center (2011-2017). According to the architects: “Over its short lifetime, the Beirut Exhibition Center, located on the landfill area of downtown Beirut, fostered cultural production through more than 40 exhibits and other events. But with a stagnating economy and precarious regional security situation, the reclaimed area of Beirut remained vacant. With no surrounding construction activity beyond the assembly of buildings mock-ups, the Beirut Exhibition Center mirror-finish corrugated façade, which meant to reflect the growth of the new city around it, reflected nothing but the movement of the clouds. Its façade, which meant to register the construction dust specks in its delicate surface, remained unscathed, continuously cleaned and maintained. Almost six years after opening, the Beirut Exhibition Center was finally disassembled—its landscaped bamboo pocket garden demolished and its façade now stored in a warehouse.”

L.E.FT Architects is a New York / Beirut based architectural office, established in 2005 by architects Makram el Kadi and Ziad Jamaleddine. L.E.FT is dedicated to examining the intersections of cultural and political production with the built environment. With an interest in diverse programs, a focus on innovative interpretations of architecture is posited as a design onset, redefining the relationship between the architectural object and both its environments and its users. Recent work has included the development of several cultural and religious buildings, located in diverse and often contested contexts. These include the celebrated Beirut Exhibition Center (2011), located in war-torn downtown Beirut, and the award-winning Amir Shakib Arslan mosque (2017), located in the religiously rich Lebanon’s Shouf Mountain. Currently, the office is working on the new center for Religious and Spiritual Life, and Contemplative practices at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
