A Japanese bamboo maker from the Kansai region made this Chinese-style basket for the Ikebana flower arrangement, using Madake bamboo and rattan and usring the following techniques: mat plaiting, twined mat plaiting, twining, square plaiting (on base), bending, wrapping, and knotting. The basket comes with a fitted wood storage box, with a paper label "Handled flower basket"
It is a fine example of an early Kansai-region flower basket for use in the Chinese-inspired sencha style of tea-drinking; typical features include the tall handle, symmetrical dense weave, and elaborate knotting.
