“Beirut’s architecture has reflected a history that has been anything but linear. The amalgamation of buildings of different periods, styles, and scales was the x-ray of an accumulation of ambitions, contradictions, and unexpected stories. In the traveler's eyes, however, everything was strangely harmonious... It will be very difficult to recover... But we have to try with all the instruments of our different fields of knowledge and demonstrate that we need our past to build the future. It is a big honor to participate and help the Beirut Urban Lab with this modest contribution that I hope is the beginning of many more initiatives to bring hope to the city.” —Juan Herreros

Juan Herreros has donated this signed, numbered print (15/15). It represents a selection of urban pavement patterns from his project System of Squares (2012). Herreros notes that “in its less than 200 years of history, the city of Colón in Panama also has a convulsive history of colonization, emigrations, and fires that destroyed it on two occasions. The proximity of the entrance to the Panama Canal gives it a strategic value that has also made it a nest of splendors and marginality... The project reflects on the inequality of the social classes that sustain the functioning of the city and its economy, confined to the most unhealthy and flooded spaces of the periphery.” The print was produced for an auction at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York in 2013.

Juan Herreros is an architect and educator, Chair Professor and Director of the Thesis Program at the Madrid School of Architecture and full professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation of Columbia University in New York. He has previously taught at Princeton University, the Architectural Association, the EPF in Lausanne, the IIT in Chicago and Other schools in Slovenia, Finland, and Spain.

His office Estudio Herreros is conceived as a collective platform through which he pursues his professional, pedagogical, and research activity. His theoretical work is focused on the re-definition of contemporary architectural practice and its dialogue with other disciplines. His professional work has been displayed in individual and collective exhibitions and widely published and awarded.
