Composed of porcelain and brass, the Akoya Table Light was designed by Johannes Hemann in 2019. This design was developed by gluing together numerous cotton balls and allowing them to form a random cloud-like shape. Afterwards, the cotton mass is dipped into liquid porcelain and fired in the oven. The design is an open edition made to order, measuring 40 x 20 x 20 cm. Thanks to the handcrafted production process, each Akoya Light is a one-of-a-kind.
German designer Johannes Hemann’s eponymous studio was launched in 2011. His work is characterized by an organic, process driven aesthetic—often teetering on the edge of dreamlike. According to Hemann, his designs aim to “translate the complexity and diversity of nature into objects and products.”
Hemann has exhibited broadly throughout Europe, Japan, and the US, presenting at prestigious galleries, institutions, and events like Victor Hunt Gallery, Aram Gallery, Mint Gallery, Trapholt Museum, Design Museum Holon, ICFF New York, and Design Days Dubai, among others. He lives and works in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Germany.
