Ieva Saudargaitė Douaihi has donated 20-08-04 18:08:04, a one-of-a-kind, signed digital print (Ed. of 1 + AP), reflecting on the moment when time “ceased to exist.” The official title should include a strikeout line, which is not possible to reproduce here.

According to Saudargaitė Douaihi: “I was not in Beirut when the explosion happened... After hearing the news, I was glued to my screen, and I remember looking at the streams of surveillance videos shared on social media, replaying them over and over, and slowing them down to pin the exact time of the explosion: 2020-08-04, 18:08:04. In the days and weeks that followed, it felt like time ceased to exist, and it still feels like that today. I don’t know when it will be returned to us. But this photograph, which I had taken a few years back during a sandstorm, kept resurfacing, because life in Lebanon often felt like a suspended reality—and it cannot be more true today. Reflecting on this condition, I decided to violate the photograph and bring it forth into that precise moment where time became no more.

She adds: “Taken during a sandstorm that cloaked the city of Beirut in a yellow haze, the photo captures a lone man diving with abandon into a blurry Mediterranean Sea, the same sea that swallowed most of the energy of the August 4th blast, as well as the city’s other tragedies and secrets. The photograph is revisited: its print is etched with the exact time of the explosion, the time when time stopped and (still) remains suspended.”
