The boundaries of time and material are blurred and compressed in this series of monolithic objects by Hongjie Yang. In each, rough-hewn forms fuse seamlessly into sleek refined surfaces. Both functional and sculptural, these furniture pieces made in either aluminum or stainless steel are the outcome of an innovative casting method that blends ancient techniques with modern technology. Measuring 47 x 40 x 30 cm, this design is a limited edition of 8 + 2 AP.
Yang is an Eindhoven-based designer and artist whose practice blends fact and fiction, the familiar and the uncanny, to reflect on the increasingly fluid times in which we find ourselves. His practice explores the power of transformation by bringing in a wide range of disciplines, including art, design, and technology. This approach is informed by his study at Design Academy Eindhoven, where he received an MA in contextual design in 2015.
Yang’s work has been exhibited at museums and events around the globe, including Le Centre Pompidou, Design Museum Holon, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Dutch Design Week, and London Design Festival, as well as at esteemed galleries like Future Perfect and Spazio Rossana Orlandi, among others.
