Unique forged silver kinetic pendant, the two halves held together by a rivet. This pendant was made while Bertoia was teaching metalwork and jewellery at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, at the beginning of the Second World War. Like his contemporary Alexander Calder, Bertoia set himself the severe limitations of using only ‘cold connections’, especially rivets, while avoiding solder. After leaving Cranbrook in 1943 his jewellery production was restricted to just family and friends although just before he died Bertoia was working on an unrealised project with Kaare Berntsen of Norway to produce a line of jewellery.
