Hanne Friis’ extraordinary textile sculpture, Buoyant, has been carefully crafted by hand with repetitive movements that create variations in shape, texture and color. The canvas has been hand-dyed by indigo, and what begins delicately with a needle and thread explodes into large, expressive forms. The sculpture appears animated and as the tension of the stitching alternates, it naturally curves, exuding sensuality. Friis extends the limits of the logic and conventions of textile, creating independent forms with an ambivalent status, situated in an interspace between sculpture and stylistic décor, inwardness and aesthetic traditions.
