R & Company

The Cobra Table Lamp was designed by Greta Magnusson-Grossman circa 1948. It was one of Grossman’s first collaborations with Ralph O. Smith, a small but influential father-and-son lighting company in Burbank, California.

The Cobra Table Lamp was notably included in the inaugural Good Design exhibition at MoMA in 1950. It went on to be selected for MoMA’s Design for Use European roadshow, showcased at the American Pavilion of the Milan Triennale in 1951. For the Good Design 5th anniversary publication, it was listed as one of the Popular Sellers from Good Design 1950-1954 .

Born in Sweden, Magnusson-Grossman built a career in architecture and design in the US. She rose to prominence in L.A.’s postwar architectural scene, a rarity for women at the time.
