Pure form meets pared-back functionality in this server by Gregor Jenkin, widely lauded as one of South Africa’s foremost designers. Its components – a faux-brick edifice sitting atop three tubular steel legs evoking industrial silos – nod towards his interest in construction, architecture and engineering. A self-proclaimed ‘maker of things’, his interest in intervention and re-imagining has shaped unique and storied pieces and a pared down vernacular that is at once nostalgic and highly contemporary. The simplicity, beauty and range of Gregor’s work is the result of a thoughtful, steadfastly lo-tech process that is part engineering, part sculpture. He was the first African designer to feature at Design Miami and has pieces in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art.
