Studio Formafantasma has donated a set of five one-of-a-kind hand drawings that depict an imaginary farm of bugs working to create shellac for the production of bio-plastic—the material that the studio famously used in their renowned Botanica project. Each A4-size drawing is signed by the artists.

Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin are Studio Formafantasma, two Italian designers based in Amsterdam. Since graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2009, the studio has developed an international reputation for experimental material investigations as well as explorations into the relationship between traditions and local cultures, critical approaches to sustainability, and the significance of objects as cultural conduits.

Working at the intersection of craft and industry, Formafantasma has received commissions from a range of brands and galleries, including Fendi, Max Mara-Sportmax, Hermès, Droog, Nodus rug, J&L Lobmeyr, Gallery Giustini/Stagetti, Gallery Libby Sellers, Established & Sons, Lexus, Krizia International, and Flos.

The studio’s work has been presented and published internationally through institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum, Centre Pompidou, Fondation Cartier, Les Arts Décoratifs, Victoria & Albert, Art Institute Chicago, Stedelijk Museum, MUDAC Lausanne,  MAK
Vienna, and more. In 2011, Paola Antonelli of MoMA and design critic Alice Rawsthorn listed their studio among a handful of practices that would shape the future of design.

Trimarchi and Farresin regularly lecture and lead workshops in various universities and institutions. Since 2016, they have headed up the Design BA at MADE Program in Siracusa, Italy. From September 2020, they will be the head of the new GEO-DESIGN Master at the Design Academy Eindhoven.">
