Brecht Wright Gander’s series of works rendered from curly maple into biomorphic forms appear as if by divination. A floor lamp’s elegant, highly-polished surface ripples as it reaches its edges, forming a bulbous, rabid ring and knotty tendrils, like a Noguchi run amok. Mythical strands of wood materialize and contort, spiraling upwards to form a surrealist lampshade. Its slight frisson of danger at once beckons and repels. Here Gander’s proclivity towards the drippy and contorted combines function and surreal form.
