Daniel Kemper Jackson’s most important piece, this life-sized Rocking Unicorn was made for fashion designer Wayne Rogers in 1974. Until rediscovered by Moderne Gallery, the design was believed to be lost, known only through photographs that appeared in the 2003 catalogue of Jackson’s retrospective Daniel Jackson: Dovetailing History at the University of the Arts.

After seeing Jackson’s Rocking Horse at America House in New York City, Roger’s wife commissioned this design as a Christmas gift for her husband. Jackson had previously created 2 carved rocking animals. In 1971 he made a rocking horse for his daughter Sophia, exhibited at America House, and in 1973 he made a rocking peacock. In scale and volume, the Rocking Unicorn is the largest work Jackson produced.

An extremely influential artist and teacher in the Studio Furniture Movement, Jackson (1938-1995) was responsible for founding the first woodworking program in the United States at the Philadelphia College of Art in 1964.
