Swiss architect Christian Kerez has donated Incidental Space: Rendering Cr01, a large, limited-edition print depicting a fragment from his presentation for the Swiss Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.

For the Biennale, Kerez built an inhabitable structure featuring a cloud-like exterior and cavernous interior. The ambivalent form was intended to leave the structure open to wide interpretation. The entrance hall to the Swiss Pavilion was lined in large black-and-white prints of the models and renderings Kereez used to envision the final piece; this print comes from that series.

Kerez says, “Incidental Space is my project that allows for the most possible forms of interpretation. I am donating this print in the hope that it sets free the most energy possible to design and give form to the future.”

Describing the work, Kerez says: “This print shows… a fragment of Incidental Space in the form of a digital rendering of the 3D scan that was made of a gypsum cast that was scaled up 50 times and physically built inside the Swiss Pavilion. The rendering was printed out in the same scale as the built space and exhibited in the [area] next to it.”

Please note: The first image shown depicts the purchasable print; the second shows that print in situ at the Swiss Pavilion. The following images are for reference only, depicting the overall Swiss Pavilion installation. The third photo is by Gaëtan Bally, and the fourth and fifth are by Oliver Dubuis—via Dezeen.

Kerez was born in 1962 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He obtained his degree in architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. After extensive published work in the field of architectural photography, he opened his own architectural office in Zurich in 1993. He was appointed visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in 2001 and has been a full professor of architectural design since 2009.
