Cartier Paris Panthère Brooch $165,000>
Macklowe Gallery

This kittenish panther playing with a sapphire ball belongs to a distinguished line of jewels in Cartier’s tradition. Inspired by Jeanne Toussaint’s fiercely independent, elegant nature, the Panthère has symbolized Cartier since 1912. Toussaint rose from difficult circumstances to become Cartier’s Creative Director thanks to her style and intelligence. Trusted by women tastemakers, she led Cartier to success after success. In 1948, she created a diamond-pavé, onyx-spotted cat perched on a giant Kashmir sapphire for the Duchess of Windsor, without seeking approval first. Toussaint knew Wallis would buy it on the spot, and she did.
