“My city is bleeding, contaminating the Mediterranean basin with its toxic fluids. On August 4, 2020, Beirut took another major blow. Today, more than ever, its deeply scarred fabric is in desperate need of assistance.” —Bernard Khoury

Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury has donated Toxic Grounds, a triptych of prints depicting aerial views of Beirut during a disturbing 2012 incident. According to Khoury, “On February 12, 2012, the Beirut River mysteriously turned blood red after a stream of an unidentified substance started pouring into the southern bank of the river and all the way into the Mediterranean. At the time, the source of the red-colored water was not determined, as blame was exchanged between the Beirut municipality and all the neighboring industrial quarters.” Upon purchase, the work will be accompanied by a signed certificate by Khoury.

Born in Beirut, Bernard Khoury studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and received a Master’s degree from Harvard University. In 2001, he was awarded the honorable mention of the Borromini Prize, given to architects under 40 years of age. He has taught, lectured, and exhibited his work in prestigious academic institutions in over 35 countries, including a solo show of his work at the Aedes gallery in Berlin (2003) and numerous group shows, including YOUprison at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin (2008) and Spazio at the opening show of the MAXXI museum in Rome (2010).

Khoury was the architect and co-curator of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national pavilion at the Venice Biennale’s 14th International Architecture Exhibition in 2014. Khoury started an independent practice in 1993. Extensively covered in the media, his office has developed an international reputation and a significant diverse portfolio of projects both locally and in over 15 countries on the international front.
