Architect Deborah Berke has donated a very special copy of the 1998 book Architecture of the Everyday, signed by Berke and fellow-editor Steven Harris.

Ordinary. Banal. Quotidian. These words are rarely used to praise architecture, but in fact they represent the interest of a growing number of architects looking to the everyday to escape the ever-quickening cycles of consumption and fashion that have reduced architecture to a series of stylistic fads. Architecture of the Everyday makes a plea for an architecture that is emphatically un-monumental, anti-heroic, and unconcerned with formal extravagance. Edited by Deborah Berke and Steven Harris, this collection of writings, photo-essays, and projects describes an architecture that draws strength from its simplicity, use of common materials, and relationship to other fields of study.

Berke is an architect, educator, and the founder of New York-based architecture firm Deborah Berke Partners. She leads the firm alongside her ten partners. Among the firm’s most significant works are the Residential Colleges at Princeton University, the Cummins Indy Distribution Headquarters, the Rockefeller Arts Center at SUNY Fredonia, the Yale School of Art in New Haven, and the 21c Museum Hotels across the South and Midwest. In 2017, Deborah Berke Partners was honored with a National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Berke is the Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, the first woman to hold the position. She has been a Professor at Yale since 1987. In 2012, she was the inaugural recipient of the Berkeley-Rupp Prize at the University of California at Berkeley, which is given to an architect who has advanced the position of women in the profession and whose work emphasizes a commitment to sustainability and the community. She is a board member of the James Howell Foundation, a member of the board of directors of Yaddo, and an advisor to the Norman Foster Foundation. She serves on the jury for the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest honor in the field.
