It’s a Toy Violet Brain by Anne Marie Laureys exemplifies the sophistication with which the artist deploys the vessel mouth—or in this case, a series of mouths. Reminiscent of the soft cavities of some jungle plant or deep-sea coral, this pot-sculpture is made up of three principle volumes, separately thrown and joined. The largest, which serves as a base of sorts, has a deep fold across its midsection, helping Laureys execute a near ninety degree turn from foot to lip edge. And that edge is something to behold—pinkish, partially flattened, opening up to a soft void.
Born in Beveren Waas, Laureys is a Belgian ceramics artist who lives and works in Russeignies. Her work is critically acclaimed and present in several private and institutional collections.
