The Dancer by Andile Dyalvane, South Africa’s foremost ceramic artist, is part of an extensive body of work that he completed as artist-in-residence at Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, in Summer 2019. Widely considered one of South Africa’s foremost ceramic artists, Andile is guided by a deep spiritual connection to his Xhosa ancestors through his work. The Dancer brings his African heritage into dialogue with the tradition of British studio pottery and incorporate references to the village life he experienced on the English coast. Over the course of eight weeks he worked prolifically, creating experimental pieces that radiate a newfound dynamism. This work almost sways with its maker’s rhythms, capturing the energetic shift that Andile experiences as he literally dances as he works.
