Description

Didier Ltd

Unique large sterling silver wire brooch hand-hammered into a vermicular design with looped ends and with a steel pronged fastening wrapped around one end. Unsigned, but recorded in the Calder Foundation Archives. Gift of the artist to Henry and Esther Clifford of Radnor, PA, in 1949. An excellent example of Calder creating a personal gift to one of his early supporters: at that time Henry was curator of paintings and sculpture at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, while Esther was a noted scholar and philanthropist. Exhibited: Scultura Aurea, Gioielli d'Artista per un nuovo Rinascimento (Palazzo Ducale, Urbino 2019).
