This collection of 24kt-gold rings—intended to be worn by both women and men—was created by Ai Weiwei for Elisabetta Cipriani Wearable Art. The exclusive project reflects the artist’s concern for the human condition and his awareness of what it means to be trapped, bound, and deprived of the freedom to travel and to determine one’s own existence. Inspired by ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and the processing of gold in ancient Greece, the rings continue the artist’s research on human migration—as seen in the artist’s ground-breaking documentary Human Flow (2017). The collection includes two models realized in an edition of 6 each. Born in Beijing, Ai Weiwei is among the most important international artists today and an influential political activist.
In 2012, he was awarded the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent by the Human Rights Foundation, and in 2015 he was awarded the Ambassador of Conscience Award by Amnesty International for his actions in support of the defense of human rights.
His work has been widely exhibited in the most high-profile institutions around the world.
