“Beirut is close to my heart. I have fond memories of the city and the people. Like many, I want to be a part of the rebuilding effort. Due to the health crisis of Covid-19, going there physically is not an option. So, this is a token of my love for the city and the people of Lebanon. From the ashes of destruction like Phoenix, Beirut will rise again.” —Marina Tabassum

Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum has donated a signed and numbered drawing from her award-winning design for the Bait ur Rouf Mosque. It depicts the ground floor plan, and was created on handmade paper. Tabassum worked on the Mosque from 2006 to 2012 in Bangladesh, and, during that period, “I visited Beirut several times for work. So, in my mind, there is a deep connection between the two.” The Bait ur Rouf Mosque project earned Tabassum the Aga Khan Award in 2016 and the Jameel Prize in 2018 from the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Tabassum is the principal of Marina Tabassum Architects, established in 2005 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Important projects to date include the Independence Monument of Bangladesh and the Museum of Independence, designed in 1997 and completed in 2013.

Tabassum is the Academic Director of the Bengal Institute. She has taught at TU Delft, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and University of Texas. She served as a member of the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Awards for Architecture in the fourteenth cycle. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Prokritee, a guaranteed Fair Trade organization that has empowered thousands of Bangladeshi women artisans through export of handcrafted objects. In 2020 Tabassum was listed among the top ten thinkers of the world by UK based Prospect Magazine for her architectural efforts to combat climate change through innovative research on movable structures.
