Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem of MODU Architecture have donated this signed, limited edition digital print from their project Horizontal City (#1, #11).

According to the architects: “The Beirut explosion was a trauma that has been felt in cities around the world. Regardless of one's connection—or lack of a connection—to Beirut, countless people shared a sense of shock and deep loss from the calamity. The event raised an awareness of the shared responsibilities, as well as the social contract, of living together in a city. Our donation, drawn from our experiences of living in the horizontal city of New York, connects to Beirut through the commonality of urban ‘ground floors.’”

Describing their donation, they write: “The horizontal city shifts an emphasis on the vertical character of New York City to highlight the public floor of the city. Chaotic, crowded, and noisy, the experiences of the horizontal city are translated from urban and environmental data into drawings. The invisible environmental and social boundaries of Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens are represented as overlapping zones in daily and seasonal flux.”

Led by Rome Prize Fellows Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem, MODU is an interdisciplinary design studio creating architecture, urban spaces, and interiors. The practice has designed cultural projects, public spaces, commercial environments, urban homes, and other projects in between. Modu defines a new sustainability—strengthening the environment while enhancing experiences between indoor and outdoor, city and room.
