James Wines has donated Civilization Center, an original, one-of-a-kind ink and wash drawing that he created for Michael Sorkin’s 2002 book The Next Jerusalem: Sharing the Divided City.

The drawing depicts a non-sectarian plaza, garden, oasis, and shade pavilions in the City of Jerusalem, celebrating ‘terrestrial life’ and the multiple cultures and religions that have occupied the territory throughout history (Western Wall Area in the Old Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem).

Founded by James Wines in New York City in 1970, SITE is an architecture and environmental arts studio, internationally known for innovative buildings, public spaces, parks, interiors, and product designs. Its purpose is to serve clients through the creation of aesthetically imaginative, visually memorable, environmentally responsible, and economically viable structures. The group is a collaborative team of architects, artists, and technicians.

Wines is the winner of 25 art and architecture awards—including the 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, 2011 ANCE International Architect Award (Italy), and 1995 Chrysler Award for Design Innovation. His projects for SITE have been the subject of 21 monographic books and honored by 5 retrospective exhibitions in the USA, Europe, and Japan. His drawings are in the collections of 35 museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Centre Pompidou. He is a Professor of Architecture at Penn State University.
