A pioneer of American craft and studio furniture, Wharton Esherick created a set of children’s chairs in 1925 as tuition payment for the progressive Hessian Hills School in Croton, New York, where his daughter was enrolled. While those first chairs were soon lost in a fire, the example on view was made by Esherick in 1931 as part of a replacement set, of which only three chairs are known to exist.
