Studio KO: Objects of Architecture

The Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) of the Republic of Uzbekistan presents ‘Objects of Architecture’, the international unveiling of its new renovation project in cooperation with French Studio KO.

The building that will soon become the home for the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) was built in 1912. Before the 1917 Revolution, the venue served as a diesel power station that generated energy for the city’s tram line.

But before the restoration commences, CCA Tashkent has been operating in test mode with the CCA LAB, a research laboratory whose aim is to nourish and develop contemporary art and cultural practices in Uzbekistan, as well as to formulate new readings and understandings of the region’s artistic heritage.

At Design Miami/Basel and as part of the Special Project section, visitors will discover the architectural project by Studio KO alongside to the stunning bronze and brass model created by Miza Mucciarelli, modeling artist and founder of the Atelier Misto.

ACDF fosters international cooperation and promotes the culture of Uzbekistan on the international arena. The Foundation spreads the national heritage through developing and supporting initiatives in the areas of fine arts and architecture, literature, theatre, music and dance. Its mission is to create an inclusive and accessible environment in the country's cultural institutions, contribute to renovation of museums, and to develop cultural patronage and professional training for the arts and culture sector.

The Foundation has also initiated a number of large-scale architectural projects in Uzbekistan: the reconstruction of the State Museum of Arts, artist residencies in Mahallas (traditional Uzbek houses) but also the reconstructions of the State Children's Library, as well as the residence of the Grand Duke Romanov. Additionally, ACDF will build a French Cultural Centre, an international centre for the restoration of art objects as well as the building of the Cultural and Information Center in Tashkent.
